Recognition awards are a crucial element of any company’s employee communication program.  These are the service awards that employees earn simply by being a part of the organization.  They are a great way for employers to communicate to employees that they are an integral part of the company and that their services are appreciated.  Examples can include anything from employee recognition pins to elaborate custom crystal or bronze plaques or sculptures.  More important than the awards, are how they are presented to the employees.

The supervisor and/or manager presenting the award must be genuine and sincere in order for the gesture to be received positively by the employee.  It takes a lot of time and money for companies to invest in specific recognition award programs and only a microsecond to blow it.  In order to get the most measurable ROI and improved performance from an investment, the award distribution process, whether employee recognition pins or custom milestone awards, must be heartfelt and convincing to the employee recipients.  Again, everything from body language to the tone of one’s voice can make or break the effectiveness of the whole program.

Service award programs can be tailored to fit a wide range of budgets.  Everything from extravagant milestone awards to employee recognition pins can be highly effective motivation tools for reducing employee turnover and increasing productivity and loyalty.  Again, regardless of the extravagance of the award selection, the presentation is truly the deciding factor in how effective the recognition investment will be.  It is truly an investment that can produce measurable ROI or simply become a sunken cost.  Most companies have some form of a recognition program in place, but very few have the ability to train managers how to most effectively use the program and track the results that come with it.
